UP YOUR RAVE HAIR GAME

UP YOUR RAVE HAIR GAME

If you are anything like me, you are probably really good at picking out a fantastic outfit, but then have zero ideas what to do with your hair. If you are literally me, then instead of attempting anything you say “oh I'll just leave it down, because that will be fine,” only to realize when your hair looks like a disaster in every single photo from the event, that it was definitely not fine. Because I am tired of having a good picture ruined with bad hair, I have decided to do some research into how we can all up our rave hair game.

After a few grueling hours spent on Pinterest, I would like to present the results for all of you other girls (or boys) in need of some help when it comes to your festival hair.

TRY SOME WACKY BRAIDS

Braids are always a good choice when it comes to festival hair. They keep your hair out of your face and off your neck, and no matter what texture or length (unless you have a buzzcut) they are always an option. If you normally do the standard French braids or dutch braids, maybe try spicing them up with some color. I am personally a huge fan of feed in braids because they give you a chance to pull in some color to you hair while keeping it our of your face. You can do them yourself with colored hair or you can get them done by a professional. If you aren’t the best at braiding then I would suggest the latter, even though it might be a little more pricey. I am a fan of incorporating neon colors because you can match your hair to your outfit and because life is short and why not. You don’t need to stop there. Instead of feeling like you need to keep it basic with one or two braids, instead maybe go for four or five for a really badass look.

If you aren’t up for taking the time or paying for someone to do feed in braids, then maybe experiment with different styles of braids instead. Go for some cute bubble braids, or maybe fishtail if you are willing to take the time. If you don’t know how to do these then check out youtube for one of the millions of braiding tutorials available.

THROW ON A HAT

Any lazy girl or girl who has had a bad hair day knows the magic of a good hat. Luckily for us, festival fashion hats can sometimes be showstoppers in and of themselves. If you are unsure of what to do with your hair, leave it down and throw on a fantastic captain’s hat instead. No-one is going to be looking at your hair if you are wearing a monument to sparkle and bedazzled insanity on your head.

If a captains hat isn’t your speed, then you could also consider a cool visor. It has the same effect of detracting attention from your hair but is a little less aggressive then a captain’s hat might be. Personally, I think you can never go wrong with a cool hat when it comes to trying to make your look a little more cohesive.

THROW IN SOME HAIR JEWELRY

Hair jewelry is an awesome way to make normal hair look extra special. For fairly reasonable prices you can get metal rings to weave into your braids as well as small charms and other cool additions. I personally love the look of metal rings clipped into long dutch braids. They add dimension as well as a cool punk-rock energy to your whole look.

Clips are another way you can accessorize your hairdo without spending a ton of money. Dolls Kill and Delia’s are bringing back to the ’90s with butterfly clips galore. Nothing is cooler than a swarm of pastel butterflies in your hair. You should also check out some of the wide ranges of inexpensive hair clips available on Amazon. This last option is going to be the most cost-effective, but you should be sure to check out Dolls Kill’s accessories section because they have some very unique options you won’t find anywhere else.

WEAVE IN SOME STRING

This look takes a little bit of time and some steady hands, but the end result can be really impressive, mainly if you use neon or brightly colored string instead of a neutral color.

With a safety needle (a large plastic one), weave thick craft thread through your finished braids to add color and a new texture to the hairstyle. If you want to get really crazy with it, try adding in more than one color for a wacky rainbow look. This is an easy and cheap way to add color, match your hair to your outfit, without taking too much time or energy.

You can also experiment with different types and thicknesses when it comes to the string to add texture and visual interest.

THROW ON SOME GLITTER

As always, when in doubt, a little bit of glitter won’t hurt. You can apply glitter to your scalp, use it mixed with gel to slick back your hair for a ponytail and add a little shine, or literally anything else you can think of. If you are at a loss for ideas, then Pinterest is going to be a great resource.

My favorite glitter hair looks come together when different textures and shades of glitter are used together. Try a mix of fine glitter and then some larger shapes to add texture to the look. A blend of complementary shades will also make the glitter look seem a little more intentional, but in all honesty, you should just do what you feel happy with.
